Laura's visit to Chicago was perfectly timed. After a few minor home repairs (which usually turned into major home repairs once I started), Laura flew into the city for a Communication conference and was able to share Spring Break with me. Close to completing her thesis, Laura presented for a group panel a presentation on the old visual/verbal binary. Luckily this was also her second time in Chicago, so we were able to take in a few sites not always on the tourists' list: the Oriental Museum at the University of Chicago with ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian artifacts, the Newberry Library, and the Chicago Art Institute. Laura and I grew very upset with Chicago's odd closing hours, the fact that the city all but shuts down around 7pm. Almost every stop we made closed 15 minutes before arrived. However, Laura did get me into an amazing hors d'ouevres reception at the Field Museum, where we took in the Pompeii exhibit and plenty of food and drinks for free on her convention!
There were also quite a few funny moments on her trip too:
1. The homeless guy calling she and I lovebirds to get our money.
2. Laura's random comparisons, like the Land o'Lakes butter.
3. The woman who assaulted the mens' bathroom while I was inside, assuring me that she had seen it all before.
4. Searching for the crocodile advertised on the menu of our pizza restaurant.
5. Pocky's dismay with the first visitor she could not jump up to or lick at all.
6. Laura's fascination with air and heat vent covers in buildings.
7. Laura's Newberry Library story... ask her sometime.
8. My hopeless attempt to make Krispy Kreme a last-minute Chicago Landmark.
